Child Safety GPS Tracker and Locator

This is the Child Safety GPS Tracker and Locator that I found on the internet. My 5 and 8 year old daughters used it on our recent holiday in Hong Kong and China.

Factors to consider :

• Size : The GPS Tracker must be small enough that it can be worn by your child without it getting in the way of their activities.
• Convenience : The GPS Tracker can be worn on their body and not just kept in their bag in case they got lost and did not have their bag with them.
• Ease of Use : The GPS Tracker can be used by even a young child as long as the parent explains the various buttons. They do not have to remember any telephone numbers or figure out how to use the device. The '1' button is to call Mommy, the '2' button is for calling Daddy and the 'S' button is for emergencies, SOS or calling for help.
• Security : The GPS Tracker is ideal for using on holidays to make sure your child is safe. Once the telephone numbers have been programmed, parents do not have to reset the GPS Tracker in any of the countries they visit.
• Discipline : The GPS Tracker is used to track the child and make sure the child is safe and where they are supposed to be. It cannot be used to play games or call other people besides the 2 designated telephone numbers.

Taking it on a Road Test

I thoroughly tested the GPS Tracker in Singapore, my daughter used it when she went for classes so she could call me anytime (really not such a good idea...) and incessantly SOSed me.

We then used it on our travels where it gave me peace of mind. It was terribly easy to use and was packed full of features for such a tiny device. My younger daughter even dropped hers on the ground and it was still OK and working fine (though I don't recommend dropping or throwing it!).

Getting the GPS Trackers was a small price to pay to keep my kids safe. I always take all necessary precautions if possible and over-prepare. You should see our luggage when we travel. My hubby has to throw out stuff or we wouldn't even be able to get out the door.

Pros

• The Child Safety GPS Tracker is designed to connect you with your loved ones and enable you to know where they are at all times.
• The Locator still works in buildings and covered enclosed areas by using cell phone telecommunication signals.
• You can access the location map from an iPhone or any smart phone, laptop or computer using www.trackanywhere.org.
• Pre-paid SIM cards under your respective country’s telecom companies can be purchased. These SIM cards can be topped up and do not incur monthly charges. Remember that such pre-paid SIM cards have expiry dates though.
• If you enable IDD calls, your child can call you when you are overseas using the GPS tracker.
• If the SIM card is not IDD call enabled while overseas, it is OK. The gadget will still be able to carry out the rest of its' functions, your child would just not be able to make or receive IDD calls.

Cons

• The GPS Tracker can only be used in Asia and Europe.It CANNOT be used in America and Canada.
• The GPS Tracker is not water-proof.
• I put a sticker on the back cover to prevent my child from accidentally opening the cover.
• Pulling out the SIM card will cause a loss of all the emergency contact information.
• The standby time was about 1.5 days, but considering its small size, that wasn't a surprise.
• It was only able to provide the GPS coordinates once when requested. You have to press the 'hang up' button on the device to reset it or you can reset the GPS tracker using your mobile phone, before you can request for the coordinates again.
• The GPS coordinates given are based on the cell base station used by the GPS Tracker, so sometimes the coordinates were not very accurate. It is highly unlikely that your kid will be kidnapped in Singapore, so I was OK with that.

The above picture shows the map as seen on www.trackanywhere.org using the GSM Base station ID sent in the SMS message from the GPS Tracker to my mobile phone.

The picture on the left shows the SMS message that my iPhone received after setting the 1st designated emergency number; the SMSed GPS location after the SOS button has been triggered on the GPS Tracker and the SMS message warning of low battery power in the GPS Tracker.
