Hidden Home Hazards

Hidden Home Hazards highlights key areas to safeguard in order to keep your child away from danger.

Children have a natural instinct to explore. Very young children do not know or even understand the concepts of safety and danger. Always try to explain the consequences of any rash or dangerous actions. Over time from about 18 months old, your child will grow to understand that there are sometimes serious unintended consequences that result from careless actions.

"I am an elephant, I can stuff things in my nose."

Some children may stuff tiny objects up their noses (or any other orifice!) or swallow them whole when they put them in their mouths. Keep small items such as magnets, buttons and jewellery out of their reach.

"I can skip over these like a deer in the zoo."

It is very easy for children to slip, trip and fall as they are energetic and fast-moving. To prevent serious falls from happening, keep the floors clear of anything that may cause tripping. Potential hazards include toys, gadgets, shoes and magazines.

"I'm Spiderman/Superman. I can jump down from high places/fly."

Kids can suffer injuries when they fall off the top bunk while at play. Only allow children over the age of 6 to use the top bunk.

"I can slide down the railings like Peter Pan"

No child is too young to start learning about stairway dangers. Teach your child to always walk, not run, up or down the stairs. Railings should only be used to help keep his balance, not for hanging from or sliding down.
