Visual vs Audio Memory

Most top students have a very good visual memory, an excellent photographic memory can be learned. Find out how.

Talk to most academic top performers and do a non-scientific survey, you will find that most of them have very highly developed visual memories. That is, they have photographic memories. This does not mean they have bad audio memories, in fact both memories are highly developed in these children and adults. I have found many to be not just good in their studies, some are polymaths. They are so good at whatever is their passion, be it science, literature, mathematics, languages, sports or music and the arts.

We as parents and mothers, must help our children find their passion, their gift that will sustain them through their lives. Yes, they have to study but they must never, EVER lose the joy for learning. I hope that we can all continue learning something new till the day we die. What a rich life we would have led!

Training Visual Memory in Children

For young children, start by playing games that train them to visualize things in their minds. I play a game in which I let my child look at a picture or scene, then she closes her eyes and I ask her to recall different aspects of it. By constant practice, they actually get better and better at it. You will be amazed at what a child can remember.

My 4 year old daughter could recite a list of 50 pictures in about 30 seconds. You would think it was terribly difficult for her to memorize it, well it wasn't. In fact most of the kids in her Shichida class can do it too. Now at 5 years old, she can memorize and recite 200 pictures in about 2.5 minutes. The amount of practice she needed? Just looking at the pictures and listening to the audio CD 3 times, reciting the pictures while pointing out each one. After that, she has already got at least 90% of the images in her head already.

Most 4 to 5 year olds can memorize the Chinese 3 word poems 'San Zhi Jing' with no effort at all. Memorize English poems? It's a snap to them because they think that it is such fun. It might be a challenge for us adults but not for them.

There is always a Book Fair going on somewhere in Singapore. Get books at steep discounts and there are sometimes even activities available to entertain the kids at the big fairs.
