Water Safety

Keep your kids safe when in or near swimming pools and other water bodies such as the sea, canals and reservoirs with these Water Safety tips.

  • Make sure your child is always closely supervised when in the water. Do not get distracted and lose sight of your child near a pool. During social gatherings, adults can take turns to be the 'designated watcher'. If you must leave, take your child with you.
  • Keep your child out of the water during bad weather. Parents should endeavour to learn CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation). There is also a danger of lightning striking the water during thunder storms.
  • Do not depend on air-filled swimming aids, such as water wings, in place of a proper life jacket. Flotation devices are NOT life-saving devices.
  • Follow safety rules and signs.
  • Make sure you know where the lifeguard and rescue aids are.
  • Enroll your child in swimming lessons as early as possible, but do not assume that he is not at risk just because he knows how to swim.
  • Teach your child to always jump feet first to avoid hitting his head on a shallow bottom.
  • Do not allow your child to play or run near the pool as he may trip and fall.

The conditions at sea or other open water bodies can be vastly different from the calm nature of swimming pools. As such :

  • Ensure that your child is equipped with knowledge on water safety and adequate water survival skills before participating in open water activities.
  • Ensure your child puts on proper safety equipment such as lifejackets at all times.

Did you know that the time it takes for you to...

...cross the room for a towel (10 seconds), a child in the bathtub can be submerged?

...answer the phone (2 minutes), a child can lose consciousness?

...sign for a postal package at the front door (4 to 6 minutes), a child submerged in the bathtub can sustain permanent brain damage?
