Ovulation and Pregnancy

The miracle of birth begins when a sperm from the father fuses with an egg from the mother to form a single cell with its own genetic blueprint. This single cell then divides until eventually a new human being is created.

A woman's entire stock of eggs are formed in her 2 ovaries before her birth.

What is Ovulation? When is Ovulation?

The Ovulation Cycle

During a woman's reproductive life, her ovaries release an egg each ovulation cycle. Each ovarian cycle lasts about 28 days and the development and release of an ovum or egg, ready for fertilization by a sperm is called ovulation.

When does ovulation occur?

Ovaries usually ovulate alternately. The ova develop in follicles in the ovary, which matures and ruptures, thus releasing its ovum. This happens on or around 14 days before the end of the cycle, the ovulation date. The ruptured follicle, called the corpus luteum, grows for some days and produces the hormone progesterone, which is essential for the development of the embryo.

In the absence of pregnancy, however, the follicle withers away, and a new menstrual cycle begins when the lining of the uterus is shed at the beginning of the woman's next period.

Best Time to Get Pregnant

The most fertile ovulating period for a woman is when the egg is released from the ovary which occurs about 14 days before the end of the cycle. After leaving the ovary, the egg is drawn into the fallopian tube, where it awaits fertilization by a sperm. The endometrium which is the lining of the uterus becomes thicker and spongy to receive a fertilized egg, under the influence of the hormones, oestrogen and progesterone.

After ovulation, the egg can only be fertilized for approximately 12-24 hours. So the best time to conceive is two to three days before ovulation to the day of, or just after ovulation when your odds of getting pregnant are much higher. I don't have any tips on how to get pregnant fast, but making love around your ovulation period is a good bet. Finally relax and have fun, making babies shouldn't be stressful, you know?

I tried unsuccessfully for almost a year for my third child and can you believe I got pregnant the month I quit and left my extremely stressful job? So stressing yourself out over getting pregnant has a negative effect on your chances of getting pregnant. I recommend just relaxing and enjoying the experience. I just loved being pregnant each and every time.

Fertility varies from person to person and at different stages of our lives. For most people, the fertility of both men and women reaches its peak at about the age of 24.

When can you expect to get pregnant

Among couples having intercourse regularly without contraception, 25% of women will conceive in the first month, 60% within 6 months, 75% within 9 months, 80% within a year and 90% within 18 months. The vast majority of normally fertile couples achieve pregnancy within the first two years of trying.

Consult your obstetrician if you have been trying to get pregnant for a long time (compare with the norm listed above) for help getting pregnant. Please don't get stressed out about trying to get pregnant quickly, it might prove to be counterproductive.

Choosing Baby Gender

The gender of a child is determined by whether the fertilizing sperm is an X sperm (female) or a Y sperm (male), as the woman's ovum is always female, X.

The X and the Y sperm have different properties. The X sperm (female) is larger, slower and longer-lived than the Y sperm (male). The X sperm is faster, smaller and shorter-lived than the X sperm. They also appear to be favoured by the slightly acidic conditions in the vagina.

There is little scientific evidence to support them, but you can try the following ideas in your quest to choose the gender of your baby :

When

For a female baby, make love up to two or three days before ovulation as only female sperm survive this long.

For a male baby, make love on the day of, or just after ovulation, as the faster male sperm will reach the ovum before the female sperm.

Frequency

For a female baby, make love fairly frequently, as this lowers the proportion of male sperm in the semen.

For a male baby, make love infrequently, as this will increase the proportion of male sperm.

Just a short reminder that every baby, whether boy or girl is such a gift to the parents. I hope that parents remember that there are great women, as well as great men in the world. What makes the greatest difference is the upbringing of the child.

As a victim of sexist attitudes in a traditional Chinese family which values the male child over the female child, I would like mothers to remember that they themselves are women and we should be the last people on earth to subject our own children to prejudice and injustice in their own home.

Even in this time and age, my gynaecologist who has 3 daughters (two of whom are doctors and one is a lawyer) told me that occasionally, he has to reassure and pacify distraught and tearful pregnant women who discover that their impending baby is a girl. How sad is that?

Tips for getting Pregnant

To optimize your chances of getting pregnant, please keep these tips in mind when trying to get pregnant :

• Have penetrative intercourse two to three times a week.
• Although very frequent sex can diminish the number of sperm in each ejaculate, don't abstain for longer than 10 days or the sperm count will start to fall.
• Women should start taking folic acid supplements daily at least 6 months before getting pregnant.
• Both partners should eat a healthy diet and take regular exercise.
• Both partners must stop smoking and should drink relatively little.
• Overweight women should try to lose weight. Obesity compromises ovulation.
• Don't confine intercourse to just the fertile days. The stress involved in using temperature charts to find ovulation days was found to be counterproductive. An easy rule of thumb : One of the signs of ovulation is when the woman finds that her vaginal discharge is thicker and mucus-like. This occurs around the ovulation days.
• Men should wear loose fitting underpants to allow circulation of air around their testes and avoid situations where overheating is a possible hazard.
